Big Band Sunsets is Australia's premier big band festival, curated by MoJO, held annually since 2005.
Situated on the Mordialloc foreshore each Saturday afternoon in February, Big Band Sunsets is a free event that sees local school bands, plus upcoming and established big bands from across Melbourne perform for the local community, with free swing lessons too! Each week culminates with MoJO and guest artists, showcasing a mix of local, national and international talent. Bring a picnic along and enjoy the afternoon's entertainment, free every week. For the latest news on applying to play, artist announcements and scheduling, follow the Big Band Sunsets and MoJO Facebook pages. |
School BandsFostering a love of music and sense of community through performance, school bands are invited to perform at Big Band Sunsets each year. Any school band can apply to perform, with 1/2 hour performance slots per band. School bands open the festival each week and performers are encouraged to stay after their performance and take in the atmosphere of more experienced bands.

Community BandsCommunity, semi-professional and professional bands from all over Melbourne perform at Big Band Sunsets each year. Past festivals have seen volunteer and council funded bands; service bands like the army, navy, air force and police bands; and swing and big bands composed of up coming and established local musicians.
These bands have a 1 hour segment each week, and play to audiences of several hundred people. |
MoJO Sunset ShowThe show culminates each week with MoJO and a different guest artist. The atmosphere is electric, with the sun setting over the bay and the dance floor full. Past guests have included Shake a Tail Feather: the Blues Brothers show, Alinta Chidzey (Chicago, Moulin Rouge), Mark Andrew as Elvis Leaves His Mark and Ross Irwin (the Cat Empire, the Bamboos). This festival finale is often interactive, with music lovers young and old dancing, singing and enjoying the show.
